Reader’s Question:

I have a drivers license in Maryland and I just received a ticket in Virginia. How will this affect my record in MD?

Jim.

Thank you for asking Jim.

Maryland does not access points for tickets received for out of state moving infractions generally. The ticket you received in Virginia would not be assigned points to go on your MD license unless it is a serious and a violation instead of something minor offense like a speeding ticket.

Maryland and Virginia are part of a Driver’s License Agreement which allows them to exchange tickets received in a different state back to the home state. Although it is not likely that you will receive points on your Maryland license for the Virginia ticket that you received, it is possible that the ticket itself might show up on your driving record. In addition to that, always make certain that you take care of the VA ticket because both states are part of a Non-Resident Violator Compact which means if you fail to pay a ticket received in a from out of state then your home state is required to suspend or revoked your driver’s license.

Goodluck!
