No, normally GAP insurance would not be accepted by a DMV as proof of insurance on a car when you are going to renew your registration in Alexandria, VA.
GAP is not a type of primary insurance. Gab does not provide any coverage if you do not have comprehensive and collision and are at fault in an accident. Gap pays the difference between what an insurance carrier would pay you if your vehicle is declared a total loss and the balance of your loan.
State financial responsibility laws vary but in most states that require you to show proof of insurance when you renew registration and at the time of registration require you to that you have the state minimum liability requirements. These depends upon state laws. In many states it is property damage liability and bodily injury liability with at least the minimum limits set by the state. In some no-fault states, it may be personal injury protection (PIP) and property damage that you must show proof of to the DMV in Virginia.
