Reader’s Question:

I will be moving from New New York to Virginia Beach, Virginia. I would like to know if my driving record will follow me in Virginia?

Virginia Beach, VA

According to the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), basically an out of state driving record would be placed on your new Virginia driver’s license so you would start anew . This is of course as long as you do not have outstanding traffic tickets or other issues that are pending in New York. If you do have traffic tickets or other moving violations with your New York driver’s license then you would need to get them cleared up first before applying for a Virginia driver’s license.

The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicle will check the national driver registry (NDR) to make certain that your New York license does not have any pending tickets or other violations with it, such as an active suspension, etc, before allowing you to acquire a driver’s license in Virginia Beach, VA.
